HomeGlossaryAgent template

Agent template

Also called: agent preset, agent blueprint

Definition

An agent template is a pre-built agent definition with a job, a schedule, and a set of tools already configured, so deploying it produces a working agent immediately.

In practice

A template is the difference between a blank prompt and a running agent. Rather than deciding a persona, a task list, a cadence, and a tool set from nothing, you start from a configuration that already produces a specific deliverable, such as a morning brief or an inbox triaged every thirty minutes, and then adjust it in plain English. The reason this matters is that the most common way a first agent fails is never launching: the design grows for a week and nothing ships. A template sets the bar low enough that something runs today and teaches you more than the planning would have.

Example

An operations lead wants a morning brief but has never configured an agent. Instead of writing a persona and a task list from scratch, she deploys a morning brief template: it already has a 7am schedule, the tools it needs, and a defined output. She changes two things in plain English, her time zone and the topics to watch, and reads her first brief the next morning.

Common questions about agent template

What is included in an agent template?

An agent template bundles the decisions that stall a first agent: a defined job, a schedule or trigger, the tools it needs, and an expected output such as a brief or a triaged inbox. Deploying the template produces a working agent immediately, which you then adjust in plain English instead of designing from nothing.

Can I customise an agent template after deploying it?

Yes, and you should. An agent template is a starting point rather than a fixed product: change the schedule, the sources it reads, the tone of its output, or the steps that need approval. The point of starting from a template is to have something running today and to learn from real output.
