HomeGlossaryAgent environment

Agent environment

Also called: agent sandbox, isolated environment

Definition

An agent environment is the isolated place an agent runs: its own filesystem, process space, credentials, and resource limits, separate from other agents.

In practice

Isolation matters for two reasons that get conflated. The first is safety: an agent that can read another agent's files or credentials turns one mistake into several. The second is operations: separate environments mean one agent's crash loop or memory leak cannot take down the rest. An environment can hold a single agent or a team of agents that deliberately work together and share a workspace, which is a different arrangement from agents that share a machine by accident. The distinction to hold onto is that isolation is a boundary you chose, not an absence of one.

Example

A developer runs a coding agent and an inbox agent. In one shared environment, the coding agent's runaway test suite eats the memory and the inbox agent stops mid-run; worse, each can read the other's credentials. In separate environments, each has its own filesystem, keys, and resource limits, so the test suite can only crash itself, and the mailbox credential is invisible to the coding agent.

Common questions about agent environment

Why run each AI agent in its own environment?

A separate agent environment limits both mistakes and outages. If one agent misbehaves, it cannot read another agent's files or credentials, and a crash loop or memory leak stays inside its own boundary. Agents that are meant to collaborate can still share an environment deliberately, as a team with one workspace.

Is an agent environment the same as a virtual machine?

Not necessarily. An agent environment is defined by what it isolates: filesystem, processes, credentials, and resource limits. A virtual machine is one way to provide that boundary and a container is another. What matters is that the separation is a boundary someone chose and enforces, not an accident of shared hardware.
